dodgy ignition?
« on: 24 January 2006, 14:56 »
ok ive looked at all i can on the search engine for todays latest problem (getting pretty sick of this  car very quickly i must say) and havnt come up with a specific answer so i need to know..

the car has been starting fine no probs the battery is fine if a little low. took the car out came home had lunch went back out to start the car and it all lights up and flashes at me but when i turn the key, the clock resets, it makes a small burrr noise and wont start.  it wont even try to go.  any ideas?  any quick fix?

could this be a dodgy ignition barrel?

get a multimeter, and check the alternator, also check the battery. It sounds very like the alternator regulator has got stuck which will make it drain the charge out of the battery whilst it is standing whether it is being used or not. This happened on my old valver, pissed me right off till i found out it was a simple fix.

Knackered battery or alternator of course....  Also apparently there is also something on the alternator- that i can't remember the name of - that can go and allows a path for current to be drawn from the battery while the car is not in use. Someone posted on this not long back i think, just can't remember who!

EDIT: Duh it was Slick and it was in this topic.......  hows that for smart work?!?      Yeh get multimeter on it make sure its charging, 14v with the engine on, 12v or more when its off!

1st thing id do is check the boot light isnt staying on, but it sounds to me like you may have a dead battery :)
