Can't get into gear
« on: 20 November 2005, 08:40 »
I drove to work yesterday morning no worries at all. Then when I got in my motor to come home I couldn't get the thing into any gear with the engine running.
All gears work no worries with the engine off so I put it into 3rd, started the engine and drove home. (Probably only time I've stuck to the speed limit on the m-way)
Weird thing is - the clutch still worked so I didn't stall at any of the traffic lights/roundabouts on the way.
When I got home all the gears were working fine.
This morning though - same problem. Had to get the gf to give me a lift in.
I don't know what the problem is but it sounds expensive.
Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Could be your slave cylinder on its way out .Quite common on the cable change boxes ( 02A  ). Try beeding it if you can  , if the fluid that comes out is blackish in colour it's likely the seals are starting to go ( drawing in air past the seals on the slave ) , this would only be a temporary measure but would at lease give you an idea whether the slave is at fault. :undecided:

Hope this is of some help.

have you bashed hard into any gears lately ? your linkage may have become misaligned, its fairly common.
i've never done it but im told it's something you can check/adjust yourself, i think i saw instructions for it somewhere on the www.dieselgeek.com website (they make quick-shifts for vw's)

Spotted yesterday morning that the clutch pedal hadn't fully come out. When I pulled it out everything worked fine.
Geezer at the garage reckoned it was a common problem and the slave cylinder was at fault so GTI EDITION you win a prize
Cheers all!!

I'd just like to add one thing : I sometimes came across this problem ( clutch pedal not fully returning) on the early Audi Coupes and (Pucker   ) Quattros and that was caused by the internal spring in the master cylinder breaking .  :nerd: ( But I have not had any experience of this happening on VWs ,especially later models ).
Sorry if this has confused you but it's worth bearing it in mind .

P.S. so....what's the prize then ?????
