Hi
Does anyone know whether the front fog lights were offered as an option on the 16 valve before they were made standard In 1996. I ask this because I have a 1994 16valve. I had a minor frontal shunt a few weeks ago and decided to replace the dummy strip in the bumper with front foglights. I got the foglight kit from GSF for £62. This kit included a wire to insert in the loom above the radiator for vehicles that do not have the front foglight loom.
Well, after fitting the fogs, I searched for the blank hole in which to insert the wire which came with the kit. Surprise, surprise I could find nowhere to insert this wire. I then had a closer look at the loom already in place in the car and discovered that there were 4 unused plugs - two on each side. I connected the foglights to two of these and they worked. A quick check on my loom's part number confirmed that I have the correct front foglight loom fitted. Also, the loom should support the electric headlight adjusters, although I do not have the correct headlight switch.
My headlight switch is the rear foglight version which only has 1 clickout position - therefore both front and rear fogs come on together. I will get the dual foglight switch which has two clickout positions.
Although I was quite pleased to find out that I already have the correct loom, because I understand they are quite hard to find, I do wonder why the loom is in place without the fogs (and the headlight adjustment motors) attached. I think that the front fogs came as standard on early VR6s, and i wonder whether they were offered as an option on early GTI's and have possibly been removed by a previous owner who might have replaced the headlight switch as well. I can't work out the options codes in my vehicle service booklet.
Grateful if anyone could let me know whether they were an option on early Mk3's and if possible the options code for this feature.
Thanks
