Question about side trims
« on: 09 November 2005, 00:06 »
Just wondering if anyone could clarify for me which models came with the thick door trims? Did all the GTi's have thin trims? And if so why are mine fat?

only the Gti`s with the 90 spec arches and big bumper etc had the thin strips all others had the thick ones, if your Gti has small bumpers and the standard arch extensions then you will also have the thick rubbing strips, anyone correct me if im wrong as im not exactly Mr brain when it comes to this stuff but im pretty sure im accurate there

All lower spec models got the fat trims regardless of age, but the later GLs got big bumpers from the factory with a different front splitter.  They didn't have full arches, but had spats that fit under the bumpers, but still kept the fat trims.  I think the late 1.8 Drivers had the option of big bumpers from the factory, but this has not been confirmed.

GTIs from 1990 onwards on a G plate got the big bumpers & skinny trim as standard, but it isn't uncommon to find a late registered early model on a G plate with small bumpers. :)

The best way to tell if you have an early or late MK2 is to look for the hazard switch, if its on the dash then its an early model, if its on top of the column then its a late spec.

Mine is an '88 8 valve gti which originally had small bumpers. Guy who had it before me put gsf big bumpers on but left them black. with holes in. nice. This would explain my large rubbing strips i think. Goooooood  Thanks.
