Coolant capacity (2015 Gti DSG)
« on: 28 June 2026, 21:53 »
Just had my thermostat housing and water pump replaced. I wanted the coolant system flushed and refilled with G12 Evo at the same time as i have removed the silica bag.

From my research, it looks like the car takes about 8 litres - is this correct? They said they only got about 5 litres out of the car. If there's about 5 litres of G12 Evo and 3 litres of the standard stuff, should this be ok?

Thanks

Just fill it up, start the engine and let the stuff work through. The car will need to bleed all the air out, or you'll get a hydro lock.

When i did my water pump, i bought the bleed kit from amazon, with the correct header tank connection. Made it so much easier to see the bubbles as they worked out.

Took around 45 minutes to an hour to work all the air out.

Make sure you get the right coolant, which it seems like you have. I bought genuine VW. I got 8 litres i think, ready mixed from VW.

Thanks Wayne R.

Seems strange the garage said they only got 5 litres out. I have checked again today (about 2 weeks after job was done) and coolant level is still correct.

My guess is that if you are draining the engine when cold then you won't get out the coolant in the heater matrix and on the other side of the thermostat, which is why they only managed to drain 5 litres.

When I changed mine (plus expansion tank) I probably got out between 8 and 10 litres but I used the 'hot' method shown on YT with the engine up to temperature and the cabin heater on max.

I did mine after I had the heater matrix replaced but ended up with slightly orange coolant which I'm lead to believe is quite common if even a small amount of residual G13 mixes with G12 Evo but apparently doesn't compromise its effectiveness.

My 2015 manual GTI is going into my local garage on Monday for them to investigate a coolant leak. I seem to be getting a coolant warning once a month recently which is getting tiresome.
