Recently, my Mk8 GTI briefly suffered it's first infotainment system problem. Since the car was new in March this year, there have been absolutely no issues whatsoever - I have been really pleased (and relieved) by this. However, one day a month ago I parked up, was away for an hour, and returned only to find the infotainment screen doing some weird and previously unseen things when the start button was pressed. It then turned completely black.
I immediately reported the fault to my dealer and booked an appointment - the nearest being a month away from the date of booking. They said they would run diagnostics on it to trace the problem and check that the software was up to date. They also said there was a recall out for my car (emergency call module or something) and that would also be done. Ho-hum.
More from curiosity than anything else, I decided to switch the screen off and on again using the button to the left of the display. Eureka! The display burst into life and has been completely trouble-free ever since - not a trace of a fault, perfect every day. However, I decided to keep the booking; when checking in, I was asked if there was anything to report. I then told them the good news that the system was working perfectly and had been for a month, whereby they advised NOT doing the planned checks as it might take hours, possibly days to replicate or induce the original fault. Obviously, this willbe closely monitored.
But here's the kicker: the service manager told me that if they DID run the diagnostics and could not find a fault, I would be charged £144 for the diagnostic time! EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS ONLY 8 MONTHS OLD! Is this right? Has anyone else experienced this blatant robbery?
