Steering rack making clicking sounds
« on: 28 July 2024, 15:13 »
Yesterday whilst stationary on my driveway with the windows down I noticed that my steering was making some clicking sounds, almost sounding like some electrical shortage. Happens (or most noticeable) when the car is stationary and I turn the steering left and right etc. (not just on full lock even just a small turn).

I googled the symptoms and there is one golf r owner on a different forum who posted a video with the exact same sound and he had to have his steering rack replaced.

Anyone experienced had the same sound or had a fix carried out?

I know some owners have experienced creeping sounds and had some parts of the suspension replaced / greased, this is most definitely steering related.

update - new steering wheel rack. Dealer agreed to have it diagnosed and were unable to confirm if it was safe to continue driving the car. Agreed to have it squeezed in this week and have already ordered a new steering wheel rack in the event when its up on the ramp it is that on a worse cases basis. Said its a 4 hour job and will involve having to re-calibrate lane assist etc.

Only had the car just over a month; hopefully this will be the first and last thing that goes wrong with it

Waiting for a call in the hope the car is ready to collect today...will update shortly. Will ask if there is a reason as to what caused the part to fail but suspect i'll get told its just one of them things. Will keep you posted.

Update: got a call today from the dealer, the part has been replaced and they are keeping the car for another day for an extended test. All being well I will get a call tomorrow to confirm the fix has worked and there are no issues and car can be collected.

Away so the earliest I can collect will be next week (they knew this would be the case).

Can’t fault the dealer as they were 1 of 3 I called and agreed to look at it the same day and order the part quickly etc.

I did ask them the reason for the part fail again and they just said (as expected) it was just a failed part with no explanation why it failed.

Hoping this will be the first and last of any issues.

Just see a post from @Bluto which reminded me to update. The steering rack was replaced under warranty and so far so good no noises. The problem described by @Bluto was exactly as i had.

Whilst going though the paperwork from the dealer i noticed that there was an entry for a new engine cover and having checked there is indeed a new cover on the engine (Car never came with one).

They have identified a sticking gear linkage which they will fix under warranty in November as that is the earliest slot with a replacement car.
