VW have removed engine covers from Mk 8s since around March 2022 re TPI 2066316/1. To bring our dissatisfaction with this to the attention of VW can you please complete the poll to identify how many of us have had our covers seized. Sorry of how the poll is formulated but with my limited understanding of Small Machine Forum software it was the best I could come up with. I tried to amend it and made it worse! It will at least provide how many of us have been affected by this. Apologies again.

I have voted.

Little story about mine. When I saw the couple of images of GTI's on fire and then subsequent recall due to overheating or whatever I removed mine myself, it took about five seconds to remove it.

Then in April this year when I took mine in for its first service the girl at the desk told me mine was due to have the engine cover removed as a mandatory requirement. I subsequently told her I'd removed it myself and it was in my garage at home. The look on her face was akin to being told I'd done open heart surgery or similar (I'm not a qualified surgeon). Now my thoughts here were if it was potentially to catch fire because of the engine cover why weren't VW insisting on these getting removed at the very first opportunity?
And on another matter I said can I have a stamp when you've done the service in my book please I'm not sure if it's all online or if you still manually stamp the book, not the service book I don't have one just in the front of the owners manual would have sufficed. She said yes we still do stamp manually that's all OK.
Anyway once the service was completed a different employee told me they don't stamp the book anymore. I didn't bother to argue, life's too short.

Oh and one final thing I stated that under no circumstances were they to update the software as I'm sure I'm one of the lucky ones and I have had a very well behaved car in my entire ownership (15 months now). I actually wouldn't let the car go into the workshop without making sure that the lead mechanic knew not to do this.

Sorry about the long post, I'm sure some of it is relevant.

I have a 'replacement' service book that the original dealer started that the current dealer always stamps up and provides a printout of the full service history as well. Some seem to do as requested!
Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.

Well I got a printout of the work undertaken which now lives in the pocket with the manual so no harm done.

I managed to avoid getting mine confiscated by ignoring the recall letters and removing it myself temporarily when the car was in for its first service.

I ignored the recall letters initially too. Mine seemed well attached and not likely to spontaneously combust.

… and then one day I took a look at it and realised it had recently melted at the rear.

That was the point I decided VW could have it back.
A new one would be appreciated but I’m buggered if I’d pay £500 for an aftermarket one.
