Golf R MK7 Timing Chain Change?
« on: 16 January 2023, 09:30 »
I'm just booking my 2017 Golf R with 29000 miles on the clock with the VW garage and they've mentioned about the Haldex "and I can't see any history of the Cambelt."

Does the cambelt (chain) really need changing after only 5 years?

I'm also presuming the Haldex is not part of the serviceable items?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Your car doesn’t have a toothed rubber cam belt and the dealer ought to know that! If they don’t, then is that an indication of their lack of knowledge? Maybe worth considering going elsewhere to get your car serviced and maintained :whistle:.

The metal timing chain on the mk7 / mk7.5 R is a non serviceable item, and while it may eventually need changing - it certainly doesn’t need doing at 29k miles. It should be fine for around 100k miles - at that point, it would be worth getting it checked periodically for stretch as it approaches 100k mile mark, but the original timing chain should be fine for many years and miles to come.

The Haldex isn’t part of the normal service and will be charged for separately. Ask for the filter / strainer to be cleaned, as the standard Haldex service just involves changing the Haldex fluid and not cleaning the filter / strainer. This is the difference between a clean and dirty filter / strainer;

Thanks @SRGTD - That's what I thought regarding the timing chain but just wanted to double-check. Also, thanks for the advice regarding the cleaning of the filter.

It might be that they meant the auxillary belt, that is relatively easy to change and if the car is on the original the rubber may have deteriorated due to age.

If that is the case take it elsewhere if they can't even get the name of something correct. :grin:
