Clubsport DSG Gearbox Coast function question
« on: 22 May 2021, 18:05 »
Please can any owners confirm if the DSG coast function on the Clubsport GTI is active in all modes? Or, is it just in ECO/Comfort mode?

And, does the coast function vary dependent on if the car has DCC or not?

In the mk8 R, the coast function only works when the car is in ECO mode....

Engine coasting is a function of whether or not the gearbox is in drive or sport.

I can only presume on the R it's in S in every mode except eco, is that right?

On a clubby it will be in S in sport and ring mode..and you have eco and comfort modes that are D.
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

OK, so in the Clubsport I guess you have Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual settings (Ring if DCC) so, are you saying if the car was in Normal (Default start mode?) and gearbox in D, the car would still coast, but when in Normal, gearbox in S, the coast function wouldn't work?

If you set up the Individual mode, does this disable coast function regardless of gearbox being in D or S?

Sorry to be so inquisitive, I would just like to be aware of the parameters as find the coast mind highly frustrating!

In the R, the only time the coast function operates is when the car is in Eco, in all other modes, regardless of gearbox being in D or S, it doesn't function, my fingers are crossed that it's the same in the Clubby

On the mk8, drive and gearbox mode are linked.

You in comfort mode, if you flick the gear nugget you are in sport drive... In eco mode you can do the same... You can have individual mode setup with whatever you want and drive set to Eco or comfort and knock it into turbo mode with a flick of the nugget whenever you want (i do this)

While coasting can be a bit weird, running in S mode all of the time is a bit tedious as well i can assure you.

You could always get a tvs dsg tune, they can delete coasting amongst other things. It's about a grand to do it.

Ok, I may be over complicating my question here, basically want to know if the coast function is active in all drive settings, so, if I was in the every day, run of the mill  Normal mode, gearbox in D it would still be active?

Yes, "comfort" is the new "normal" and it's got coasting.

It definitely has, I've never used eco and it definitely coasts and the clubby i know is no different.

If you flick the selector to S it stops....

Is there even an Eco setting on the Clubby?

The Coast feature kicks in randomly in Comfort, sometimes when I expect it to drop the revs to idle with my foot off the gas it doesn’t and other times it does. The clutch very quickly re-engages when it needs to, lightning fast.

I’ve never tried it in Sport to be honest. I’ve been spending two hours plus in the car every day lately (except today) but generally keep it in Comfort when cruising about, then it’s flicked into Sport when I need a burst of extra oooomph. I don’t keep it in Sport when easing back to normal driving as it gets boomy every time I hit the gas (more so with the back seats permanently folded as my car is actually a van these days!) so can’t tell you if the Coasting function still works in Sport.
When I get back to driving at weird night time hours I’ll test it on a bit of quiet open road and report back. I seem to be forever stuck in heavy traffic lately, bring back lockdown!!
