Help Removing Gearstick Surround Trim on MK7 GTI Centre Console

The gloss black trim around the gearstick on my GTI is very badly scratched and even tried polishing the scratches in situ and only made it worse. Is there a way this trim can be removed without removing and replacing the entire centre console? Plan is if it can be pryed off I could try and polish the whole piece properly or paint it.

Hoping someone on here has done this and can point me in the right direction.

Hi. Not sure if you’ve sorted it but that trim piece is part of the cup holder assembly. It can be removed along with the cup holders so you could then work on it.

You need to remove the cubby in front of the gearstick and the side trims etc.

In this YouTube video (same YouTube channel as the video link posted by @ajmoir earlier in this discussion thread), it shows that part of the centre console being removed. Looks like there’s quite a lot of dismantling involved if the OP wants to be able to remove their scratched trim panel to polish out the scratches.

@daz8161; would it be possible to get that trim panel wrapped in gloss black vinyl whilst it’s in situ rather than remove it? Removal brings with it the risk of potential damage to other centre console trim pieces (scratching, breakage of clips etc) during the removal process.

So the trim that holds the buttons can be removed separately with the cupholder (although it may be able to be then separated from the cupholder once that whole piece is removed) which is what I was saying in my first post. I lifted the whole section in once piece to swap the cigarette lighter to the KW DDC button but have to admit I didn’t fully remove it to see from the underneath.
