Definitely avoid unless you want a potential MOT failure and attention from the police.
When I changed my GTI lights to R lights I used some tint film (from ebay, very cheap) on mine so make them ever so slightly darker to match the new lights. You can cut it in place using a stanley knife and safe a few pounds. Same for the high level brake light.
