Braking Vibration
« on: 11 October 2005, 07:23 »
OK - thanks for the responses on the cam belt - i'll get it changed asap (with tensioner!)

I've got a serious problem with the braking.

I got all discs and pads changed on my 1999 2.0 petrol - because they were getting thin at a non-dealer garage.
2 weeks later I had serious vibration through the pedal on braking - so I took it back and they agreed the discs had warped and changed the front ones.  It was fine for about another 2 weeks, same thing happened.  I took it back again but they refused to accept there was a problem.  I took it to VW and they said it was warped discs - so I paid another £200 to get some new ones. Two weeks later the same thing is happening again.

Anyone got any ideas - I can't have got three sets of duff discs, can I ?
It's driving me MAD.

Cheers

thats strange!!! i havent a clue about that one...

i was thinking about if your wheels are balanced properly but then i think they only vibrate at around 50/60mph if they are unbalanced.  :undecided:

bets wya to check for warped discs is to use a 'clock' as the disc is being turned, you will then be able to see any variation of the surface that would cause vibration (there is a tolerance level, anything above this wouldnt be good) it is highly unlikely that you have had 3 sets of duff discs, i could understand one cheap set, but not 2, and then for genuine vw discs the same no way. when alot of garages are busy they forget to do simple jobs like clean up the hubs with a wire bush etc, not cleaning the calipers and re greasing any sliders etc, these need to be done for your brakes to fit and work perfectly, if not done crap on the hubs can give a 'juddery' sensation similar to that of warped discs but i would have thought it would have been near enough instant rather than 2 weeks down the line. also get wheels rebalanced as sugar described just to help eliminate any wheel wobble from the problem, id get your abs checked to, as a fault on this which may not show on your abs light on dash etc may be causing then to do what there spose to do when skidding, this could cause a juddery effect too.

I had a similar thing a while back.. Turned out to be a dodgy steering rack - ended up having the whole thing replaced (luckily under warranty).

Just remembered... A few months ago, I thought I had the same problem again, but it went away when I got new tyres ( I think it must have been the wheel balance ).  So I'd try getting the wheels rebalanced just in case - should only cost you about a fiver a wheel.

Only as a suggestion are you bedding the brakes in properly?  They should be treated carefully avoiding heavy braking as much as possible for about the first 200 miles, if not as they are not bedded in properly you get hot spotting and potential for disk warping. just a thought, shagmeister

Thanks for the replies guys.
It's definately not balancing - since I only get vibration on braking.  I always treat new pads/ discs with the greatest respect - so it's not a bedding problem. Steering rack could be the cause - but I was also thinking it may be a wheel bearing problem.  Even at 10 mph if you just touch the brake gently while riding along you can feel a gentle pulsation from the brakes.  Maybe it is an ABS problem, but I know how ABS feels when it applies - kind of a grinding/crunching feel. Either way I think it's gonna be alot.  I'm gonna take it in and get an estimate.  Maybe it's time to get rid!

if you're gonna get rid, take it to a different dealer and get it PX'd for another GTI. Don't tell them about the problem and hand your cash over quick. They'll have to foot the bill then!!

Well, that's what I'd try to do
