With regard to HUD... yes Audi have it, but the availability of features and options flows down both through a manufacturers range and also across the group - because VAG have a hierarchy, off which, VW is tier #2.

Yes, I was talking about a Mk7.5 AID with the km/h clock issue.

I've not heard of the AID going blank yet - it was my fear when it came along, given how the MIB can crash and burn...

The Mk8 might look a bit different in AID, but I doubt it will have anything amazing. The amazing in the Mk8 will be the other panel that replaces the switches... be amazed as you like about that... I'm not gripped personally.

HUD is something that VAG have not widely implemented. Just interested in the rationale for not having it group wide or the logic for the models that it is available on.

If you take a look at the latest series Panamera and the buttonless interface, it permanently looks like a toddler's toy with prints all over. The haptics/glass is done by Bosch (if I recall) and it's fantastic but call me old fashioned, I still like a tactile physical button. It also shows every single spec of dust and debris.

Maybe give a tuner who does VAG mods a call and ask them about the AID. I drove a 7.5 Golf R in Sweden when I was over there last month and the entire interface was in KM/H including the speedometer so the graphics exist in the interface.

My biggest frustration though is that when you set the units to km/h the main speedo dial doesn't change. The sub displays and ACC change though. I know there are rules around UK vehicles have speed displayed in MPH but it is really silly in this day and age. Not sure if ODB11 can fix that... would be interested if it did.
there is a section under units adjusted: in the dash that has speed; miles per hour, maybe changing that with OBDELEVEN might sort that problem,

Actually you can go in with either OBDII or VCDS and change the "TUBE" version in adaptations from the standard "3" (on a GTI) to Tube version "2" and get a slightly different display with better increments.

This is the standard GTI display (Tube 3)

This is Tube 2

There are a couple of advantages / disadvantages to going to Version Tube 2 as below:

Advantages
  • Better separation of the digits and easier to read
  • The temp and fuel windows are slightly larger therefore a little easier to read when glancing.
  • It allows access to another simple screen design (like standard clocks) that isn't available on the performance models (as below)

Disadvantages
  • Speedo display stops at 160mph (not 180mph as per the performance models). Not sure how much of an issue this woudl be on UK roads  ;D
  • Graphics don't look quite as sporty (personal choice - I actually dislike the italic fonts on the GTI version, but that's just me)
  • Seems to change the car graphic in the main stereo screen to a standard Golf not a GTI

Interesting.

I expect that it also changes the startup message on the MIB too?

I can see another disadvantage - seems to make the the car 50% thirstier on tube 2, judging by the range shown on each example.

It seems pretty empty between the 2 dials, compared to the digital dash available on the Polo in classic view (I think it's a newer variant probably destined for use on MK8 Golf.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Thanks, that simple version is fantastic, nice and clean and does anyone really need 180mph even in Germany?

If only it could be coded so it put the current ACP content into the middle of the screen rather than it just saying ACP is in use.

Yes, you would have to change the country; as EU and UK AIDs are identical (unlike classic clocks), as well as GTD/GTI/R versions. It is all in the setup. So there must be a way to do it; the pity is that it is not in the menus for easy access once one comes to the Continent (or continental cars here) so that it is easily done by the driver.
