New Battery Voltage
« on: 26 June 2018, 13:31 »
Hi Guys. On using the VW app with the little dongle that plugs into the OBD port - (yes, I know nearly all on here think it's a hateful device and refuse to use it), but I find it reasonably useful to track mileage etc.

Anyway, I don't want this to degenerate into a discussion about the VW dongle and app. I have a question re the reported battery voltage in the car. My GTI as you may know is only about 2 months old, but in that time, I've very rarely seen my battery voltage from the app go over 12V (most was about 12.2 volts). Currently according to the app, it's say at 11.7 volts. Does that sound right, as I seem to recall on my GTD (albeit with most probably a beefier battery) was always up in the high 12V low 13V's (using the same app). My journey to work is though a town with lots of SS traffic, but going home I've at least 9 miles of reasonably fast motorway then 3 miles of 50mph road.

Should I be worried or is there a way to definitively check this ? Is it as simple as a multi meter across the battery terminals ?

**edit**
I've just borrowed an accurate digital multi-meter from work and measured across the terminals, the voltage was actually 12.43 V. That sounds a bit more like it and it seems therefore that the voltage displayed by the app isn't all that accurate ?

Mine's currently showing 13.3v if that helps.

Saying that, my stop / start has been very eratic yesterday / today, only cutting in briefly before the engine restarts.  Maybe down to the weather, but I don't have my ac on, have my sunroof open instead.

I am reassured by finding this post. My car is nearly 5 years old are rarely does the dongle measurement exceed 12v...which I would have assumed would make starting the car difficult...but it spins the starter as well as it always has.

So I am puzzled, but not puzzled enough to buy a multi meter!

Stop/start has always been reluctant to engage until well into a drive, and my car is barely used nowadays and only does long (and fun) trips. It has covered just 17k miles in nearly 5 years.

Can anyone recommend a battery conditioner?

You shouldn't need a battery conditioner if the car is used regularly. If it gets to the point where you do then it is time for a new battery.

As for the dongle, I constantly think (probably paranoid) it is only there to make VW money. I am sure if you go to them they will say the voltage shows low they will happily sell you a new battery even if you don't need one.
