Quick question re driving modes
« on: 08 May 2018, 11:59 »
Still getting used to the new GTI, but one thing does puzzle me (sorry if this has been asked before). On my GTD, when I set up the individual profile for the driving mode, I'd typically set ACC - Sport, DCC Comfort, Engine Noise - Sport, Steering - Normal and Engine - Eco.

Now on that last one, when I set up a similar profile on the GTI, every time I restart the car I see the engine mode has reverted back to Normal ("D" on the DSG drive not "E" for Eco) ? On the GTD the diving modes would stick. The GTI is still showing the driving mode as "Individual" so it's not like it's been set back to Normal. Is this something VW have programmed in on the latest models or is there an issue.

Please let's not get into the "why do you want Eco as it's a pile of crap anyway", I'm just interested as to why the car reverted back to normal even though the mode display still says "individual". A quick push of the mode button then touching "Individual" (even though it's already selected) does change it back but confused all the same ?

It's your car's way of telling you:

Why do you believe the engine has reverted back to Normal? What you see in the dash as D1/S1 is merely the gearbox setting, it does not say a thing about which mode your engine is in. Easy to confirm by bringing up Individual mode settings and verifying it's still left in Eco. If not then you're right that engine mode is lost after restart but i'm 99% sure it's not, it's been asked before a few times, people confuse the gearbox mode indication with the engine mode. Could you check again and make sure it's not like that?

I noticed that on mine as well.  If you change the mode while driving a different letter pre-fixes the gear indicator on the dash 'D' for normal 'S' for sport and 'E' for eco.  However if you turn the ignition off, next time yo start the car the driving mode will definitley be as you left it, but the gear indicator only ever says 'D'.

You might have a point scanesare, as the Individual mode still clearly says "Eco" for engine. But then I didn't think you could select "Eco" for the DSG gearbox unless the engine was running in "Eco" mode. I know for instance from the gear lever I can only select Normal "D" and Sport "S" by moving the gear lever back a notch, but It's impossible to select "Eco" on the gearbox without selecting "Eco" for engine. That's why I'd assumed it had re-set itself (as it was showing "D" for the gearbox setting).

Also, it still doesn't explain why my 2016 GTD would always restart in the same mode I left it e.g. if the gearbox was in "Eco" mode then it would restart in "Eco" mode ?  Not a big issue as I won't be in "Eco" very much (except maybe on a long journey), but just wondering why VW "tinkered" with this setting ?

What I think is happening is that whenever you select Eco for the engine, the gearbox modes available are E or S,  D has been substituted by E and you can easily see that by having the engine to Eco and flicking the stick back repeatedly, it will only cycle from E1 to S1, no D1 available. At least that's how it should be in up to MY2017 GTIs (and in my Clubsport). Not sure if in the 7.5 GTI D1 shows up with engine set to Eco after restarting, is it really like that?

Has to be noted that, (again up to MY2017) Eco for the gearbox is not an accessible mode from the stick or in fact from anywhere else directly as there is no explicit gearbox option in drive profile (is there in the 7.5?). The only way to set the gearbox to Eco is indirectly by first setting Engine to Eco, then it does what I described in the first paragraph, substitutes your D for E.

my understanding of it is when eco is used this enables it for the engine and gear box. thus quicker gear changes and coasting mode down hills etc. but when the egines been turned off the gearbox goes back to normal (d mode, better imho) and the engine stays in eco mode. this is how i leave mine, unless i go in individual and thats set as sport comfort and normal. this too resets the gearbox when ignition is off. back to d but the engine says still in sport mode on the dash top left :)

as to why the gearbox resets but not the engine i'm not sure, but i'd imagine there's a good reason out there somewhere..

From another thread (ok, about sport mode but...):

I've noticed this happen on my manual GTI. Just checked the online owners manual and it confirms -

The selected driving mode and individual settings will remain set even after the ignition has been switched off.

The driving profile Sport or Race will remain set even after the ignition has been switched off, however when the ignition is switched back on the engine or automatic gearbox could change to the driving profile Normal or the driving mode D.

To return to driving mode S and activate the sport functions in the engine, select the driving profile Sport or Race or push the automatic gearbox selector lever to the rear ⇒ Changing gear .

So it would appear that although all other settings for the Sport profile will remain active after the ignition is switched off the engine and DSG box could revert back to Normal.

Amazing what you can find out if you read the instructions.
