starting problems

when the car is cold it does not start properly it start then cut's out it does it about 3 time then starts ok when it is warm it is fine i have tryed putting the pedal down once then start the only way is the start it and plant the foot down for 5 seconds but at 5 in the morning it is not the best thing to do

i own a mk2 16v and have a great problem starting from cold.  The car seems to run very lean.  If i turn the ignition and let the pump prime and then turn it off and prime it again about 20 times the car starts up fine.  A friend recjons that its the accumalator

I recon its your 3/4 point unit thats gone or is disconnected, its job is to hold the revs up for a few seconds on a cold start :)
Easy to check, watch it and start the car, it should start off fully extended and retract after a short time.  On my Driver it was stuck in the retracted position, bit tricky to swap though as you have to take the whole carb off.
