Should there be tappets in my head.
« on: 01 October 2005, 20:25 »
I recently bought another head which has all 5 brackets holding the camshaft down, which I believe maybe from a mk1 gti.

I have stripped the head down and had it skimmed etc etc, I have put the valves back in and now can't find the tappets, I have the tappets from the old head but they don't fit as the valves in the new head sit higher than the old head.

I can't remember ever taking them out or did I.

Does anyone know if a mk1 head had tappets in it or not.

I have tried doing some research intot his but still can't find anything about if it had tappets or not but what i think I have found out is I think the head is from a mk1 as the holes for the fuel injectors have like a hexagon shape and the only injectors I can find with the hexagon shape bit on them is a NON-electronic fuel injection system which I think is an old system which to me would indicate an old mk1.

Has anyone got a non-electronic injection system if so have the injectors got this hexagon shape on it (like a nut built into the injector)?

If so does it have all 5 brackets holding the camshaft down instead of 4 and does it have tappets.

I see that the mk2 tappets don't fit as they sit too high because the ends of the valves sit flush with the top of the head but the mk2 valves are shorter and sit low in the head so when the tappets are put in the top of the tappets sit flush witht he top of the head.

I look forward with interest to any response to this.

Thanks in advance

mk1's do have tappet buckets with little discs attached to the top which provide adjustment (the discs come in varying sizes) you should be able to get these easily somewhere like volkspares,

I may have some kicking about if you get stuck.i'm going 16v  so have no need for the spare head in my loft!!!

Hi

Do the tops of your spring sit flush with the top of the head or are they like the mk2 gti and sit low to allow for the hydraulic tappets?
