Mk 7.5 Clubsport??
« on: 27 May 2017, 23:27 »
Hi All

Having been sorely tempted to order a clubsport, then missing the cutoff date and being a bit put off by the prices, I'm now eyeing up a few pre reg clubsports on the market.

Reading the Evo review of the 7.5 Gti they state that they fully expect a 7.5 Clubsport to be on the horizon. Is there any truth in this or just media hype?

I guess I have been assuming that the Clubsport aka ED40 is unlikely to be repeated until the ED45 is a thing??

I reckon if the Mk7 Clubsport had sold as it should, then a Mk7.5 might have been a possibility. It didn't, as your mention of pre registered cars indicates, so I'd say it's unlikely.

Go on, you know you want to!

Well since you asked....

It's a 3 door in reflex silver with the black roof, dsg and car net app. Only option I wanted but have forgone is that bucket seats but I can live with that. It's a pre reg car currently on 62 miles. Total discount from new RRP is just shy of £6k.

Despite success of Edition 40 it was done to celebrate 40th Anniversary of GTI, so I would say its very unlikely there will be a 7.5 GTI Clubsport!

Would certainly dilute the 'specialness' of the first Clubsport/Edition 40 cars.

I doubt VW management are too bothered about 'specialness' when it comes down to it if they smell a new niche void they think they can fill with a model.
The lightweight GTI was mooted from the off when they launched the MQB platform but probably got binned for cost reasons so they merged the idea with the 40th Anni and we got a black painted roof instead of the hinted at carbon fibre roof panel.
It looks like VW decided to have a pop at the 'Ring record to 'celebrate' the 40 years which just happened to coincide with Dieselgate. VW had obviously committed the budget by then so continued with the project despite the negativity surrounding VW in general.
Post emissions scandal I'd expect to see VW concentrate more on low emissions cars and possible future GTI/GTE developments merging the two models maybe in the very long term.
It's quite possible VW may have come back with a quicker and lighter ClubSport if Dieselgate hadn't happened. They could easily drop the Edition 40 moniker and just have a pure ClubSport. I'd not put it past the marketing department if they thought there was a willing market.

As it stands FWD hot hatches aren't massively fashionable right now. Petrolheads go for the broader appeal of the R and its ilk from other marques, and the general population all seem to want SUV's at the moment.
The ClubSport was a handy niche car to sell in low volumes but it wasn't cheap and therefore wasn't massively popular next to an R despite all the press hype surrounding Benny's laps.
If the cars had been snapped up quickly then I'm sure VW would be taking another look just like Renault did with the Clio Williams series.

I'm still yet to see a single Clubsport on the road. So as you say it doesn't seem to be a volume seller, it's one for the enthusiast only it seems.

I've yet to be in a dealers that doesn't have a few unsold.

I was shocked with the CS pricing in the UK, even more when British R's are probably the cheapest in Europe for some reason. That brought the two cars at an identical price level with some cases ending up in a more expensive CS even and it's totally understandable that for a lot of people the AWD seemed a more attractive feature than the sportier looks and drive of the CS.

For comparison, in Sweden, a base CS is (was) 5K cheaper than an R and same price as a GTI which made it a no brainer really.

Back to the topic I very much doubt a 7.5 Clubsport will be a reality despite with EVO thinks. The CS was not launched in 2013 as the GTI but in 2016, hence a 7.5 CS would be just too close to the 7CS unless the 7 series is scheduled to be around until 2020 so as to give it a couple of years minimum pre and post launch.

Then there is minimal performance headroom. In fact, if you consider that the CS had to be de-tuned to not upset the R and CS-S then it's obvious they don't have anywhere to go except from something like 300bhp without over-boost non-sense but with the current CS being close to that figure already (practically you get 290+ whenever you floot it above 2nd) I doubt this could be a viable option.
