At 45K miles it should be just about run in.  My experience with two GTi MK2s was they ran best after 60K miles and perfect for another 100K or so before things started to wear a bit (like tappers becoming noisy).

I have only had mine a week, and completely love the car. I'm finding any excuse at the moment to drive it. I felt the same way years ago when I had my 2 Mk1s. The GTI is an obsession i think...
