Mul-T-Lock Gearstick Lock
« on: 01 October 2005, 13:35 »
Allo.

I've got this rather fetching, heavy duty gearstick lock on my Golf but as I've fitted a new, thick leather gaitor to the gearstick I can no longer get the friggin thing to fit and lock in place.

The lock was already fitted when I recently bought the car, and it's the sort that is bolted to the floor under the centre console area, and rests on the left hand side at the base of the gearstick. It then has a removable U shaped bolt that clamps around the gearstick when it's in reverse - like a large padlock with the stick through the gap.

Looking at the removable, stainless steel U, it appears to have an added 'inner' U of metal that effectively sets it's interior diameter at the right size for the stick in your car. Pulling on it with some pliers suggests it may pop out but not without a vice and some heat me thinks...

Anyway. My point. Does anyone know of a Mul-T-Lock specialist in the UK? I've had a google and can't find much beyond random ebay stuff. Hopefully I want to get a new removable U for this lock, that has more space than my current one has. I would assume these things came/come in different sizes for different vehicles? And I am also assuming that the actual stationary lock bit was the standard component that a variety of these thing fitted into.

Anyone got any ideas? I don't want to have to get a naff looking gaitor, but I would rather do that than have a less secure Golf.

Are you sure they still exist?
I don't think I've seen any of them around for a while, it doesn't seem to be a very common security method.

Find a car security specialist from Yellow Pages (www.yell.com) and ask them if they stock them or know anything about those locks.

It's the version 42 of one of these buggers:

Asked at the place that fitted it, and the fella didnt know if the U things come in different sizes. Need to ring back on Monday.
