Ignition help... I'm all out of ideas
« on: 04 September 2016, 14:42 »
Hi guys

My 8v gti on bike carbs is dead. It developed an electrical fire a couple of months ago which killed it.

Over the last couple of months I have removed all of the burnt wires and replaced them all. The loom in now intact and (think) is fixed. However it now won't start. It will turn over but wont fire.

  • The bike fuel pump is still firing and there is fuel to the carbs.
  • The starter is working and the engine turns over
  • I have voltage to the coil pack
  • There is no spark at the plug
  • I tried a new coil, no difference.
  • I have put a plug lead straight onto the coil and it is sending out an intermittent spark, one when you first crank it and one when you stop cranking, nice big blue sparks
  • Connect the king lead back up and there is no spark coming form the dizzy
  • I have tried a new dizzy incase the sensor in it was killing the spark via the ECU
  • I have tried a spare ECU incase it was that

I am now out of ideas of what to test and how. I was all set to sell the car running before the fire. It sat on the drive tested, taxed and insured. Just dead. I really need to get rid of it now due to a wedding looming closer...

I would really appreciate if anyone has some ideas of how to get it running. If it's not fixed soon then it's going to be broke for parts.

Thanks
Justin

What coil are you using?
How did you check voltage to coil as you say there is voltage?

What dizzy are you using in it? The different ECUs used different ones (engine code dependent). Though why ECU if you have carbs?
