Tuning box, anyone have experience with one?

I've got the bluefin from Superchips and the DTUK pedal box great combo. Like the Bluefin as i can take the map out and in as needed.

This is alos why I like the idea of it.

I spoke to Bluefin/Superchip as I questioned the std figures shown on their dyno graph there response was...

The power graph on the site is correct - we always publish exactly what we find on vehicles. There's even a video of the test car! I've yet to see one of these 220PS or 230PS VW engines make less than 250hp on the dyno, and we've seen Golfs, Octavias, Superbs and A3s with this setup. You will note that the non Performance Pack cars makes equally high figures as stock. It's just how they roll on our dyno. Check out vehicles like the latest Mini JCW - similar sort of thing, more power than the manufacturer claim as stock, whereas the new Range Rover TDV6 makes a little less. It's mainly due to the nature of running a car on a chassis dyno - it's not the same sort of test the manufacturer do to create a horsepower figure. This is why we publish what we find - to prove we've seen a car, and to point out that it's the *gain* that's important, not the absolute power figure.

Originally DTUK also found that standard engines produced well in excess of the manufacturers figures too - so I don't reckon either were lying.

The figure to take from anything is the increase - that's the only way to compare like with like. I think that increase is very similair to the increase claimed by DTUK.

Having owned both a PP GTI & an R I can well believe the various rolling road prints I've seen showing the standard GTI (vRS etc) putting out more than the published 220/230 PS. Once run in the engine feels much stronger than the figures.
I'd also say that the R only just makes the claimed figures but is still very noticeably quicker than the various GTIs I've driven in the higher rev ranges.


I've had a DTUK tuning box and a JB1.
I prefer the JB1 but have to say the DTUK is better built and far easier to adjust.
The JB1 scores on the finite adjustments you can make, particularly if you have further mods.
Once the JB4 gets released it will be a game changer for VW group add on boxes.

the GTI 220ps that we took to the dyno was 259hp stock, and 314hp with the FSR+ on map 3 plus 2.

We've since had a customer with an S1 take his 231ps (claimed) to the dyno, and his car was 260hp stock, and 316hp with the FSR+ module

The most plausible reason I can think of is that they come out of the factory with a minimum of the stated PS output. Of course you'll get variation (probably all within 5% of each other as they come off the line), but if they're well run in they have even more potential.

My R feels a lot stronger than it did at new, people talk about their car being far better as the miles go on, but with 7 TDIs bought from new, I never saw or felt any appreciable gains. The R seems to get better and better.

I'm assuming mine has been well run in from the economy it gives even when clogging it - with a heavy right foot i'm still seeing 82% of the official combined figure on my 20 mile commute right now. A lack of oil consumption is also usually a good indicator that the car is well run in.

A test of run-in gains (or lack thereof) could be proved or disproved by dyno-ing some factory fresh ones (preferably at least 5 to account the natural variation) and then again at 1500 miles and perhaps 5k miles.

Anyone clocked a GTI pushing out 250PS+ straight from the factory on a Dyno?

How the car is strapped to the rollers, tyre pressures, atmospheric pressure, ambient temperatures, cooling fan size for the dyno, is it in an open or enclosed space, can all have an effect on the power the car produces on the day

For example I have a customer with a Stage 2 Focus ST (2.5 model) which should make 265bhp all day long
He went to a rolling road day and made 241bhp. Another ST with the same mods but different map, made 281bhp

They found a 'private' test track and nailed it.  There was no difference between the cars on the road

Dyno operation seems a more likely contributor to these variances.

A car running almost 40 HP above manufacturers stated power does sound a bit suspect. Tuners often use high headline figures for sales anyway.

I would have thought a mass car manufacturer is capable of achieving desired output as measured under whatever conditions they use to within a few %.

You often see talk on forums of certain cars being touted as always making above the manufacturers claim with limited evidence that this is the case.

There are many factors that influence what manufacturers claim as the (minimum) power output of the cars. Insurance grouping etc. are among them. Maybe VW are quoting figures 'out of the box' that the car can produce and this goes up as the car loosens up.

For whatever reason, there are some accurate dynos (with people who don't have a vested interest in what the figures are) out there showing that the cars are producing above the manufacturers quoted figures.

But then again, VW do have a reputation of underestimating figures, be it power output or emissions lol.
