just joined up.
« on: 26 April 2016, 16:50 »
Hi all. Just signed up after having my 20th anniversary golf for the last 12 month. Looking for a bit of help from the experts. My speedo has stopped working and fuel gauge is intermittent. Was thinking of replacing clocks. Clock  rev counter are fine so could it be something else? Don't want to replace clocks really as all original but if I have too then I have too. Thanks Mick

Not worth getting replacement clocks just yet!

Check the fuses.
Speed sensor wiring issue - roughly under the battery.
Speed sensor itself - clean/replace.

Thanks. That's what my plan was and nearly ordered a speed sensor but then next trip out I noticed the fuel gauge was blipping up and down, then off. That just threw my train of thought. Always a dilemma do I buy this or that so thought I'd sign up here to ask for help lol...

I think they are related, it usually seems to be issues with both at the same time :)

Interested to see what the answer to this is! Also good to see another Mk3 Anni owner, is yours 8v or 16v? :)

Sorry mate I couldn't find how to answer you. Ye it was the speedo sensor got a new one and speedo and fuel gauge worked straight away. Many thanks for your help ☺. Was a good side to taking my dash out, my battery been draining ever since I've had car. Found an old alarm, that was not in use, still wired straight into incoming supply for fuse box.  I removed it, not a two minute job re solderring upside down etc, but now my battery drain issue has gone too. Happy days. Oh and it's an 8v not too fast, but I've bought it to cherish not drive like a hooligan lol.....
