I've been a member and contributor on Pistonheads for a long time now, but it has became an unbearable place of late, to the point where I'm considering not participating in and reading the forums anymore. VAG products are pretty much universally panned for being dull, boring, or any one of numerous other cliched adjectives. There is an overwhelming feeling of closed-mindedness, almost like the whole place is populated by ageing men who like nothing better than to moan, whinge and complain about things. Nothing new is embraced unless it happens to be packing a 5.0L V8, don't dare mention diesel because there has never been and never will be a good diesel car, and you're labelled a fan boy for expressing a reasoned, balanced opinion on something. It's tiresome and threads descend into arguments before the end of the first page has been reached.

The controversy around the Golf R is hard to comprehend. I think a good Golf, a car that has received almost universal acclaim from the motoring press, popularised by VW making it financially attainable, has been too much to take for some people, to the point where they're just not willing to believe it is a worthy competitor. I can completely understand that it is not to everybody's liking, but so many people write it off with no experience of the car. Presumably the fact they borrowed a MK4 Golf for 20 minutes in 1998 is enough to put them off for life.

So yeah, I'm done with the constant negativity of the place, which is a shame because I actually like multi-marque forums. I like reading about and discussing new cars, but when every discussion is a predictable forgone conclusion it all seems a bit pointless.

I have seen your posts many times on PS and while I don't always agree I read through them and the replies, both positive and negative.  I think its good to have a balance and as soon as a VW thread appears the banter follows, the same with Porsche articles and the replies being from Lotus owners.  Its all good fun if not taken too seriously.

But as for the CSS, I do think its mental that they even bothered with the CS and so soon followed with the CSS, when the Golf GTI PP filled the slot under the R for FWD fans and the VAQ diff and the GTI without for those not so bothered, THen you have the R which is so capable and fills the top trumps power, control and 0-60.  It really brings into question the point of the CS now the CSS is out as the CSS is the ultimate "GTI" of 4 decades. The R being the ultimate Golf for me, and the CSS being the special one. Even writing that all down makes the CS seem a pointless model shoehorned into the range...

Imagine if a German car manufacturer made a performance car.
Then a 4wd version.
Then a faster version of the 2wd version.
Then a faster version of the 4wd version.
Then a hardcore version of the 2wd version.
Then a faster version still of the 4wd version.
Then a 'sport' version of the 4wd version.
Then an even more hardcore version of the earlier one.
Then an anniversary special.
Then a more stripped out version of the double hardcore one? Oh okay then.

What VW appears to be doing is nothing in comparison!

Still amazes me that when VW build a stripped out, caged, manual only, 'Ring record beater the PH massif claim it is still a boring Golf that misses the point of a hot hatch. I wonder if the same people said the same when the R26R came out?
Current – Mk7 Golf R, Night Blue, 5dr, Manual / Mk7.5 Golf R, Indium Grey, Estate, DSG
