Removing Headrests
« on: 06 June 2014, 09:33 »
I was at Ikea yesterday and bought a unit that came in a long box.  Not a problem, just needed to drop the rear seat back, recline the passenger seat and take the headrest off.

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but I couldn't get the headrest to come off.  I reckon every other can I've owned had the two rods attached to the headrest, so it could be taken off the seat.  On my GTD it seems like the metal rods are attached to the seat back and the headrest goes up and down on them.  Either way, I couldn't work out how to remove it.

Managed to get the package home okay, but was a pain as I had to take it diagonally through the gap between the front seats.

Details are in the manual, from memory you need a special tool! fits round the stem and pushes down into the seat to release the headrest completely.

Thanks for that.  So it's very similar to how it used to be, except the button that used to sit at the top if the seat is now hidden and you need to slide something under the trim to activate it.

Who thought that one up?  Crazy stuff

It'll be to make it more difficult to take them out as they are a safety feature and go towards the crash test rating.

I went to remove my passenger seat headrest on my Passat to get a ladder inside, but couldn't see how to do it, so didn't bother. Some people may remove one for a similar reason, but not bother to refit it afterwards. It's VW's way of protecting the stupid.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Press button on headrest side to raise, then gentle using a screwdriver prise the plastic surrounds of where the headrest stalks slide into the top of the seat, then you'll see to sliders press them inwards and pull headrest out. Self ex planetary once you've removed headrest stalk plastick surrounds
