VW are bringing out a suv based on the Golf so a GTD 4X4 would be really good and I would persuade my Mrs to buy it .Me I am waiting to see what the new Tiguan is like , going by the photos its quite good as well .

if this is to be believed then this engine will find its way into the GTD. If they do a GTD 4x4 estate with this engine then im in. I need to order in September so cud be good timing?

Regarding the suspension noises, there is a TPI issued 15th April this year that involves dropping the wishbones and greasing the bushes with a more substansial grease. This cured my creaking, pattering and squeaking noises.
Regarding clunking, mine turned out to be caused by a broken bracket which holds the auxillary water pump in place at the front of the engine.

All this was finally sorted after being fobbed off for more than a year and lots of visits to the dealer.

Not as many issues as you Cossieian but my 12 week old GTD has had more issues than I imagined a new car might have ;

Loud intermittent 'grinding' noise, possibly suspension based, definitely speed related, occurred over three journeys during the same evening, two of which i had passengers so i know i'm not imagining it!  It's not re-occurred yet but i've reported it to my dealership just in case.

'Check coolant level' warning ~ returned to dealer for inspection & top up.

Registration plate fixing fallen off ~ fixed with above visit.

Nav-Pro cursor (that represents the car) wandering off the map into the fields ~ corrected itself next journey.

For a car of such sophistication perhaps than not too bad after all.

That's part of my reluctance in changing my GTD. I'll probably regret saying this, but it's been pretty much bullet proof, and aside from squeaking rear brakes when reversing from cold (which came back after a dealer fix in a month or so), mechanically it's been brilliant.

Build wise I seem to have not got a Friday afternoon car as no squeaks from the interior, no weird noises from the suspension, and all electronics working perfectly (see, they can build decent car's when they want :-) ).

Of course the other big part is a) cost of changing, and b) My GTD does me brilliantly and is a great spec, and whilst I would dearly love an "R", for 90% of the time I'd own it, I wouldn't be able to exploit any of the additional power, so would really be a weekend toy.

Now a 4 Motion GTD, that would be something (even with crappy Bridgestone's)!

We think very similar as my GTD just had the Gators tied and that's it in 2.3 years and having just taken run up a few very open A roads to collect from an Argos and been able to open it up, the GTD still brings a smile as its no slouch especially when pushing the mid range.

Have to choose my next car early 2016 and its such a dilemma as the R is so tempting but that economy drop for 5-10% thrill at times can utilise the R full capability is a balance still trying to resolve in mind.

GTD - R would be the perfect compromise for me about 250 BHP and 4WD

That's a shame about those niggling faults Ian.I would be pretty fed up about it too.I'm sure VW will put it right.

3 months into my GTD ownership and all is well (so far).Nothing to report, apart from-if you don't shut the boot just right the rear camera doesn't work.It is like a VW version of 'boot not shut' warning light.
Economy has risen from 45 to 47 mpg.Pretty impressed so far.Master of all trades.

How are you shutting the boot? It usually shuts no problem under its own weight. I've never seen a "boot not shut" warning.
Maybe the rubber bump stops on the actual tailgate need adjustment?

I just close it with a slight shove,nothing too much.It only happens rarely.First time i thought the camera wasn't working.So i looked in the handbook for 'reasons camera doesn't work' and one of them was 'boot not shut'.Maybe something needs adjusted but i'll wait till it's first service.
Just remembering.The keyless locking is a bit temperamental as well.Unlocks fine but sometimes have to put my nail into the slot to get it to lock.Another tiny niggle i'll get them to look at.
