My 2.0 8v (2E) lasted 238k miles, then scrapped it (left hand drive on finnish plates in UK was not feasible to register in UK).
180k is nothing for a mk3 engine ;)

Dont really know what you guys accept from a VW engine. Mine has 138K (ABF) takes no oil whatsoever between the oil change. (which i do every ~6K miles

Normally, and this goes for all cars and brands. Engine isnt what breaks the car, its the rust (or electric).

One of my 240 (2.3 8v) GLT's had 312k on the original engine and box,
I got over 240k on a 2.3 16v turbo with stupid boost
All went wrong for Volvo with the early PRV (V6) engines and 5 cyl Ford units that went on from about 95 on.
Junk.
Best engine I have seen is a Taxi Merc 350 D in Haslach Germany with 400k on the clock.
Engine is left on in the winter to ensure its not cold when they get in, so its done a shed load more in theory.
The old 8v unit in the Mk2/Mk3 is the most reliable engine VW did, rest are pretty meh so far.
