Golf AUM Noise
« on: 20 August 2015, 17:37 »
I've got an odd knocking noise on my golf aum, the noise goes away when I put my clutch in(clutch kit done less than 9,000 miles ago) also, the cars idle is hunting and sounds like its misfiring. Yesterday I was driving it after a  short motorway trip, sat at lights at the sliproad and the car was idling at 1,000revs. The noise went away, garage has told me the gearbox is on its way out. I don't believe that, is it just misfiring? I've unplugged each coil pack to see if there is a change, there is. I'm stumped lol

Wow that sounds proper bad. Sounds like a clutch/clutch release bearing. Just because the clutch is new, doesn't mean it can't be faulty. If the clutch is faulty it can cause engine to run rough with high revs.  Misfiring could be related but could well be a separate issue.  I know the coil packs are prone to fault and disconnecting each one like you did for change, doesn't always mean they are not faulty.  I would concentrate on the knocking first, that ain't good and could blow apart at any time.  Get the gearbox off and see what's happening asap.

Yes I agree your garage is speaking bllox - if its making the noise whilst out of gear it cant be the box.
I dont think its miss firing- that noise is something moving around, most likely to be dual mass fly wheel about to split into 2 parts.
Definitely gearbox out, dont take it to the original garage as they sound like numb nuts.
