God I'm quick... Here's a section of info courtesy of the infamous rub jonny...

it will plug in and work without any effort, but it wont fit very nicely in the engien bay as the routing is different, mainly how it runs int othe scuttle. the other thign is if the mk3 is late all the lighting loom is taped into the engien loom as well so the bulkhead grommet wont fit the mk2 hole.

its a case fo untape it all, strip out all the lighting and other unneded parts then fiddle with the routing so it fits in the mk2 bay nicely. swap mk2 grommets over and your're pretty much there. i swap the mk2 wiper loom over to the mk3 loom, but you could just chop and extend to suit.

Ta daaaaaa!

an early mk3 gti (2e engine) loom would be your best bet as it runs an airflow meter and idle valve like the pb engine. I would say fitting an agg loom would be a lot more involved. why not just do a full agg conversion? gives you a bit more grunt and shouldn't affect your insurance much. and you can pick up a running but rusty mk3 for peanuts to take all parts from.

Thanks for the help guys!

Still struggling to find a loom, by the sounds of it finding an 8v is going to be the best bet. They seem in high demand. Every breaker I contact has either already sold it, or someone else is interested blah blah.

On the engine front, I will probably end up doing a 2L conversion, and get the head ported and polished. Gearbox could do with a refurb, but don't have the cash for that. So plan is, for now. Pull the engine, new loom in, 2L bottom end on. Repaint the engine bay, engine back in. Happy days.

Just need to find a loom....!!!
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.
