Check engine light after 'hard' driving

Its happened more than once. If I take 1st 2nd and 3rd up to around 5000rpm before I switch I get a check engine light. It runs fine and turns off about 2 days later. I tries reading the codes but I think my connector is bad. Any ideas?   Its a '95 Gti vr6 250k miles.

go somewhere where they have vcds.... and check what the fault codes are
