Cleaned MAF sensor
« on: 07 October 2014, 08:45 »
Had a few issues lately after a faulty brake pedal switch and poorly fuel filter. Replaced both for new parts and then noticed my car running a lot smoother but feels like I lost a few horses in that "throw you back in the seat feeling" when the turbo kicks in.

A little research led me to believe it's the MAF sensor. I followed some instructions by unplugging and driving the car. The car driven whilst unplugged was very slow, plugged back in I got my speed back but still felt like ten horses had turned into ponies. I was told to expect a quicker response having unplugged the sensor but I'm unsure as to why this didn't happen but can only assume it's becsuse my car has been re mapped.

Again followed some instructions in cleaning the MAF sensor with some electrical spray. I did this twice and even used a tooth brush carefully on the outer plastic to remove fine dirt. Plugged back in I didn't notice any improvement but today I have.

I contacted the VW stealers who quoted £130 for a new MAF so long as I give them my current one or it would cost another £75.
I asked them what brand was it and they told me it's their own as opposed to Bosh.

At this stage I'm a little reluctant to get a new one at that cost.

Question: having cleaned my current MAF would I notice a difference straight away or would it take a day or two to re adjust the settings (as this is what I think is happening).

If not the above and I'm still not happy should i get a new one from the stealers or go for a different brand?
And what's the deal with eBay selling bosh MAFs brand new for like £30? Surely not?

Car is 03 plate GT TDI PD 150 remapped

I say stick to a bosch maf. ECP do refurbs for £60 iirc. First one I got from ECP was goosed, took it back, got another refurb from ECP has worked fine ever since.

If you not getting any dashlights/codes, I would be checking the MAF via vagcom if possible. You will be able to check if the MAF is at fault.

How frustrating, since the weather had held off I checked my pipes and noticed a rubber pipe was not attached to the metal boost pile with a good seal. I tried reconnecting the clip but the metal boost pipe itself was broken slightly so the clip didn't stay in place. The pipe was located drivers side just under the cam belt. Took her for a test and I heard it pop off. Managed to crawl to s garage who put her on a ramp, they screwed the pipe together (metal to metal) for free btw. Said I should not need to replace it now. Told me to allow a few trips for the ECU to register new airflow pattern but all should be fine if not better now!!

Btw I found a website who state it's not best to re set the ECU as the values already stored in the ram will be tailored accordingly and adjusted quicker than starting from scratch. Hopefully this time next week I will be raving about how much over boost i have lol

I don't see a issue personally resetting the ECU. When you reset it, it will clear the fuel trim firgures which is good in my view if you have been suffering from vac leaks, overfuelling and fixed the issue etc. as you will not have to wait ages for it to adjust itself.

What does the car idle at?, does the rev counter hunt (move up/down on idle), does the car bottom out when you when you come to stop?

The pipe you are referring to (could be wrong) sounds like the pancake pipe which hooks into the front cooler. Check the elbow connection at the bottom of the cooler and see if there is any oil residue, does the pipe slack easy?

Pancake pipe may be the one causing the issue. I doubt you will see any movement on it unless the car is under load which is hard to as you have to be driving or on rollers.

If you do need a new MAf go for a Bosch refurb unit, mine was fine.

Finally fixed. Spent s day checking everything.

Fuel pump out and in bits - all ok
Alternator in bits - all ok
Battery all ok
Injectors checked and cleaned - all ok

Turns out I had a faulty relay 109.....£21 for a new one so I got a spare. Simple solution to an annoying issue and one that I wish I had checked first now !!

Live and learn !!
