MK1 GTi Engine Replacement
« on: 12 May 2003, 18:05 »
Help!

I have been offered a 1.6i (EG Code) engine to replace my 1.8i (EV Code) engine as this has finally given up the ghost!  Does anyone know if this is a straight forward swap?  Do I need to change the 5 speed gearbox or the wiring loom or any other ancillary bits?

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

haven't done the swap myself but i think it should work.

the gearbox should be a different ratio i think.

I think you'll find, to look at, that both engines will be exactly the same. All the connectors etc. will be the same. The only difference will be the bore and the stroke. Your current 5 speed box should also bolt straight onto the 1600.
