Brake squeal
« on: 31 August 2014, 14:54 »
I finally got round to getting new discs and pads on the front (Bosch) but I now have horrific brake squeal. Is this a common problem with these cars, I've done a bit of digging but can't seem to find a proper cure. The pads have been copperslipped has anyone used anti squeal shims?

Usually if you follow the usual install brake procedure they don't squeal! I've never done them on the front of my VW but would clean the surface of the hub, copperslip same. Clean the surface if the new discs with a suitable solvent. Brake cleaner the caliper. Any sliding pins removed and cleaned again copperslipped. Dust covers replaced back of pad copperslipped. Any retaining clips cleaned of grime/rust and some copperslip applied to the bits in contact with the metal parts of the pads. I was thinking about these Bosch ones for the front of my car. Have i missed anything?

Is the problem from one side? brakes squeal and brakes work fine? If you dismantle again are the pads glazed? try the old ones in if they still have meat on them or arent grooved from the old discs. You may need to get different pads!

Thanks for the reply. I didn't do the job, I just didn't have the time. The pads that came off, I would imagine, were absolutely shagged. There's no way I'm paying for new pads they haven't done 100 miles. If it is the pads then I can only suggest avoid Bosch stuff. I can see copperslip on pads, I specifically mentioned to the garage make sure the pads were 'lubed' up as it's a pet hate of mine. Going back tomorrow to see what they say. Like I say it seems to be a bit of of a VAG problem, tho' I must admit I'm not clued up on these cars

Have you bedded the pads in properly? 3x 30mhp to 0 stops ans 3 x 70mhp to 0 stops.

Did you buy the cheapest bosh pads (around £25 or did you buy Boshs premium range, around £48)

Cheap pads are always sh!t mate

I bedded them in exactly the same way I've always done. Normal driving for a couple of miles.Couple of 60 -30 braking then 4 or so 60-30 hard braking then just drive to let the discs cool down.
Always thought coming to a dead stop was a no-no when bedding in, suppose you learn something every day.
Not sure which pads I got I'll have to check but they were £45.

Sorry I only meant doing 70-0mhp once the pad had around 200 miles on them, (which I tough you would have covered by now)

Yes you are correct in saying, not to do 70-0mhp when brand new.

Cheers Ross, thought I hadn't been doing it wrong. It's damp up here today and hardly any squeaking
