It's already exceeded the mileage of the other car, so far so good.

In answer to your question, the badges on the front grill and the boot door are now red instead of silver.

Well 4 months down the line from my original post, I thought I'd post an update on the story.

After a word with trading standards I was able to get the dealership to replace the car, they put me in a MK7 TDI BlueMotion and I've been driving that all the way though till yesterday when I took delivery of my new GTI (2014) spec (red instead of silver GTI logos).

The problem with the old car was narrowed down to items floating around in the oil causing blockages, the engine was replaced and the car is now for sale at the dealership.

The dealership was excellent through all of this and I'm loving my new car

Good to hear of a good outcome, and that the dealership looked after you.

Hope the new one gives you lots of pleasure for more than 3 hours!
