Newbie with a 1990 16V
« on: 25 July 2014, 20:59 »
Hi there

I have just bought a 1990 16V with pretty much full history. Last two MOT's had advisory for 'misting' on front shockers.  I have to say the front suspension is a bit wallowy after my 2014 S3 daily driver but I wondered what you folks would advise.

I want to keep the car OEM as far as possible but the front suspension clearly needs some attention. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers

Any advise on upgrades. I don't want it lowered.

About to buy a new set of tyres the Avons are 7-8 years old and hard and cracked so a nice new set of PS3's might improve matters too! :undecided:

It's never going to feel as composed as your S3, or any other similar modern car for that matter, but replacing suspension components with as new equivalents will make the world of difference. If the tyres are as old as you say, the chances are many other wearable parts on the car are much older, so will be getting tired.

VW Heritage do a very good range of OEM or as good as products, so I'd use them as a benchmark for what parts are available and prices.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Thanks dubber. Have just fitted 4x new Michelin Pilot Sport 3 at £60 a corner and so far the ride is a lot better.

Car had an MOT on 30 June (300 miles ago) but Costco tyre fitters reckoned front tyres were on the markers and 3 were cracked. I was expecting to buy a couple of tyres on the front (worn out) but the tyre folks are questioning the MOT!! hey she is 24 years old and nostalgia is getting the better of me. We've had many Golf/GTi Mk 3,4 5 and 6. Always fancied a Mk 1 or 2 but money and kids got in the way in the 80's and 90's.
