I think wastegate porting is done to try and control boost creep. I can't really think of any other benefit?
Basically if your wastegate doesn't allow enough exhaust gas to bypass the turbine, boost continues to increase beyond the desired level. Potentially leading to FEMPS (f**king expensive melty piston syndrome).
