Regardless of whether Vauxhall let them go without documents or not technically they are supposed to keep records but nobody ever does apart from Halfords it seems.

Misrepresented Number Plates:

Please be aware that the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency ( DVLA ) has been dealing with an increased number of enquiries dealing with raised lettering or metal number plates. DVLA,s position is that there is nothing in the British Standard ( BS AU 145d) or in the Road Vehicles ( Display of Registration Marks ) Regulations 2001 that specifically excludes raised lettering or metal plates.

If they are stamped with a manufacture number, bs and post code of man along with charles wright front and retrorelective (whatever the f**k that is) they are perfectly legal.

Well said that man.

Car from earlier than 2001, on a set of plates from earlier than 2001 - no requirement to have all that junk on the bottom?

The fact these ebay plates are stamped with a bs standards mark does not mean they have met the regulations but rather there are made to comply, which most do not. Leaves you open to a 60 quid fine if a police officer picks up on it. And anyone who buys or sells a plate without proof and documentation is breaking the law. Number plate crime is big business, had a set nicked off my car a few year ago, they had forensics out dusting it for prints. Dubmeister are the only company i'd use.
