is it broken?!
« on: 27 May 2014, 18:22 »
ok, so just driving home along the motorway the emission control light starts flashing and the car loses power and starts shuddering. i've managed to crawl home at about 20mph but there's zero power and when idle the engine is shaking.

i've recently had a full service, fitted a pipercross air filter and had it remapped by r-tech (a few weeks ago)

any ideas chaps?

Does it sound like its misfiring??

Could be a coilpack

Did you notice any smoke out the exhaust? Does it smoke when at idle, if so what colour is it?

hi, no there was no smoke coming from the exhaust. had a chat with a mechanic and he thinks it might be the coil pack too as it is misfiring.

not sure if this is related, as i've only just noticed it happening last week, but there has been a couple of new noises. 1 is like a quiet road noise which i just put down to a bearing starting to go, hopefully this won't be related to the loss of power today.

2nd one happens when i've been for a drive, switched off the engine and there's a high pitched noise coming from under the bonnet. it only lasts a couple of seconds, almost like something electronic is shutting down.

A vcds scan should help you identify the problem.

so the diagnostic spotted number 3 cylinder coil pack which has now been replaced. haven't driven it as yet so not sure if that road noise or high pitched noise will still be there. no other faults cam up though which is good i guess

Is the electric noise followed by a click??

If so, i think thats the throttle body and i think its supposed to do that, mine has always done it, it does it if you switch the ignition to 3 then off again

Mine also makes that high pitched noise when turning the engine off. I wouldn't worry about that noise.

My engine too makes a high pitched noise for a few seconds after switching the ignition off, completely normal.

Scan with VCDS and if no fault codes and no obvious problems with driving then just ignore noises.
