Hot and Lazy
« on: 30 August 2005, 20:49 »
I have an 87 mk2 16v that runs hot.  Any ideas?

I have replaced the water pump and the head was replaced before I got it (I was assured?!).  The reason I got it was because I had a nice engine in my B3 passat gt16v and thought I'll just replace the whole motor (scrapped the b3 - cos was rusty).  But the engine bay is white and really clean and on top of that I have a baby due in 4 weeks time so time is precious.

Has anyone any experience of their engine running hot (even when the fan is running continuously!) after fitting new water pump and checking the water ways are clear?  If it helps anyone help me the engine also is very low on power and under hard acceleration (you have to to get it to move!) it smokes blue out the back.  Could it be timing?

I could take it to a garage but am concerned they'll tell me the motor needs changing when I could do that anyway without being charged especially now I have to buy disposable huggies.

I'd really appreciate some help before the wife makes me chop it up on ebay and buy a pushchair even if its redirection to previous posts.

I'd say defo summat is up with the timing, especially due to the excessive heat & poor performance combined.

One thing, what fuel are you running it on, many 16vs only run right on premium 97+ ron petrol, stick a tank of optimax and see what happens.  If its still not right take it to a garage and get em to set it up properly :)

Cheers Rubjonny,

Since my post I have had a chance to browse other hot probs and learnt that hot is the way they run.  Must invest in somemore antifreeze as my coolant (whatever it was) boiled out of the expansion tank.  This might make some difference, other than that I'm not even sure if the radiator is the correct one so might look out for a pukka 16v rad.  The only bit I know is I got it home and the thing boiled dry.  I then replaced fan.  It boiled up again (no anti freeze though) while it was sat ticking over with the fan on.  I replaced the pump (just in case) and still same problem.  All hoses have been checked but still boils and looses everything through expansion tank.

So pump works, hoses clear, fan works, thermostat changed but no antifreeze at the mo.  Can this be the solution?

Bought it with the head gasket changed so shouldn't be this, especially as oil is lovely and water has no traces either.

Will get the timing sorted as soon as I can drive it without it melting. :undecided:

make sure the cooling system is bled properly, and that when you fill it up you have the heater slider set on full heat. fill it up and run the engine while massaging the bigger hoses to expell any air. then let it tick over with the expansion tank cap off. depending on what expansion tank you have its worth replacing the cap with a new "blue" one. there was a slight design problem and they replaced the old cap with a blue one. as these cooling systems work under pressure if the cap isn't sealing right it'll boil up.
it may sound like a very simple solution but trust me a dodgy cap has been the cause of alot of cooling system problems.

Ok check the lower rad hose when the gauge gets to about 1/2, if its still cold then the thermostat is stuck shut and needs replacing.  Believe it or not the 16v radiator is actually smaller than the one fitted to an 8v, the reason is it is double cored so more efficient.

Normal operating temp is 1/2 but it is normal to get to 3/4 if in traffic, this is when the fan should kick in and bring it back down to 1/2.  Filling with pure water shouldn't make it run any hotter, as it is actually more efficient at transfering heat than antifreeze.  The reason you use antifreeze is to raise the boiling point even more (which is already over 100 degrees when the system is pressurised) and to prevent the system freezing in the winter.

Check that coolant flows freely from the small hose to the header tank when you raise the throttle over 1k rpm  too.

The best way to bleed the coolant system I have found:
Run the engine from cold with the cap off and rev it to 2k now and again.  While you are doing this squeeze all the pipes you can get your hands on, and keep the coolant level topped up.  It will eventually start to boil over, at this point turn the engine off.  Once its settled down top it up to the max mark and you should be good to go!

P.S. you don't need to set the heater slider to hot when bleeding the system, as the heater matrix always gets a flow of coolant.  This advice dates back to the MK1 which uses a 'tap' to close off flow to the matrix.

Thanks gtijoe and rubjonny,

The reason I wanna run vw's is the help available in times of need (like when your wife is threatening to call the csa when the babies not even here yet!) as well as my 87 16v looking fine even at 18!

I'm gonna dedicate some time to it this weekend cos tonight was a bit wet to be outside.

So again big thanks  for the help and hopefully I'll be using the valver for work next week.
