Id advise a polo 6n 1.4 lump. Im not tht clued up but there a wikid little engine and throw 100bhp standard but are 16v so if your looking for cheap inscurance thats probably a no go if your under 20. Failing that ive got a 1.6 lump out of my mk2 tht is free game if your in need but will need rebuild and new stems atleast.

Whats the reason for a smaller engine? If it's for insurance then that's counter intuitive as you pay more for a modified car than standard. If it's for fuel then you want a diesel not a small engine. Small engine cars suck for commuter miles as they are being ragged just holding 80 down the motorway.

1.0 L Carb iirc. That's what my first Mk2 came with, ti'll I replaced the engine for the power of the mighty 1.3 carb.

NB. Carb icing FTW!

Engine conversions are a big enough ball ache going upwards, why you'd ever contemplate it to go downwards is beyond me!
