Steering problem. Rack f**cked
« on: 06 March 2014, 20:57 »
Right. Finally found out what was wrong with my car. Took her to a garage, couldn't find the fault. Took it to Vasstech and they found the fault in 30mins (know where I'm going from now on). Turns out the rack is toast and getting a replacement is not easy, apparently.  I've been informed there is 2 types of steering rack. What rack fits mine? Mines a 1994 2L 16v gti. Hopefully someone on here knows.

Thanks Daz.

Best bet is to check what you have fitted at the moment, should be stamped with the makers name, I believe they used ZF as one choice.

there's two, zf and trw afaik...
vw put in the car what was on the shelf at the time. so you can have either system... downside is that you need to know which one it is as other bits (e.g. track rods) are different too

so have a look at what's under there now... then look for a suitable rack

I had a look in my engine bay, the rack "looks" smooth but I can't get my arm down to reach it. For all I know it could actually the raised crosshatch one. Will jack it up in the light so i can feel it
