New Mk2 GTi Owner - 1.8 8valve 5door -
« on: 03 March 2014, 20:36 »
Hello every one :)

I have recently purchased a Golf Mk2 1.8 8valve 5 door in black.

I used to own a Mk4 1.4  and recently upgraded to a seat leon, but i just wanted something more special for shows, and have always wanted to own a mk2 gti, so i hunted high and low and i think i have bought a great starting point.

Car Information:

1.8 PB engine code
112k genuine mileage
5 previous owners (not bad for a 27 year old car?)
full service history
5 door
RUST FREE!!!!

Price?

Paid £400

Problems?

Doesn't start - suspect Cold start valve? i am planning on changing the lot, ie, dizzy, leads, spark plugs, full service, brake fluid change, coolant, coolant temp sender, rebuild carbs?. new discs, pads, tyres, etc. It is still tax and MOT for 4 months. heavy wax oil, replace old components with new through out depending on what she needs :P

Modifications?

replace rear lights with newer dated ones, (M3 dark style euro lights)

no other modifications are needed, i would like to keep it as standard as possible, potentially lower it to improve the handling, strut braces? anti roll bars?

Pictures:

what are all of your fellow Mk2 owners thoughts? thank you for your time, will look forward to annoying you all! :D Located in the west midlands  :lipsrsealed:

Cheers Luke

400 quid looks like a good bargain to me as Long as its not too much of a job to get running, you can't lose there you could break it for more than that

You might struggle to change the carb on a gti (grand tourer injection). What happens when you try to start it?
In the maintenance section check out rubjonnys tuning guide to get that digifant running well. First port of call is to grab a genuine blue temp sender really.

Yes sorry, mistaken with "carb" ahaha refering to the difigant injection thingy, I havent attempted to start the vehicle as of yet due to the car being stranded and me not having access to it until saturday 15th as this is when i offically collect the car, how ever when viewed it did look very tidy and no oil residue.

a blue coolant temp sender? are these still cheap for them i take it?

No they arnt cheap but they send the signal to the ecu. When that goes or starts to go you get a whole array of different symptoms.

Welcome to the club  they are great cars but expect to kept busy as theres always something to do on them. As already said blue temp sensor (mine was £17 from vw) and then like your intentions a good service.
