Knocking
« on: 21 October 2003, 16:10 »
Hi guys,

I have a knocking noise coming from (please excuse the description!) front end of my car, i have recently had a 16v brake upgrade on my 91 8v GTi. The 16v brakes have been on for acouple of months now and have been fine, i can feel the knocking through the pedals slightly also. It only really starts when i am doing about 20mph and above, below that it isn't really noticeable. The bearings are new and the pads and discs were new also.
Could it be the CV joints?

Also whilst driving along it feels as though the brakes are on ever so slightly, if you let your foot off the accelerator to slow down the car stops as if the brakes have been pressed. The brakes have been checked and aren't on at all as the wheels spin freely! It gets worse the more i drive it!

Please help as i am starting to hate my car just lately, as soon as i sort one thing, another problem appears! Bloody car >:(

a knackered wheel bearing may be the culprit that may not show up with the wheels off the ground and show up when there is a load on the bearing.

Check wheel bearings and suspension balljoints.

Jack the car up and rock the wheel, it should be firm.

Thanks for the help guys, the bearings are brand new, they were replaced about 3 days ago so hopefully they haven't gone already :o

There is no play whatsoever in the front wheels, i jacked it up and checked and they are solid.
I was thinking it could be warped discs, is this feasible?

Thanks Guys

If the car feels like it's stopping prematurely as if the brakes are on, maybe its the rear wheels that are binding? Have you checked them? Handbrake adjustment? Rear brake pressure/proportioning valve?

As for the knocking and feel from the brake pedal, that could well be a warped disc. You could try jacking up the front and getting someone to operate the brake pedal (gently) whilst you spin the wheel.
