Steering wheel alignment
« on: 06 February 2014, 22:29 »
Hi,

I noticed today after having my car for just under 3 weeks (dont ask me why its taken me so long to notice!), that when going in a straight line the steering wheel is not straight!  it appears to be about 5 degrees to the left.  I thought I would ask on here if everybody else's are perfectly aligned or if this is common?

Thanks

Ian

Mines straight to but I did notice on my last two Sciroccos that after having the tyres changes the wheel appeared to be slightly off set from dead centre...

It may have been like that from new, I guess. I may have been fine when it was new and the tracking has been knocked out by a large pothole (or whatever)... Worth taking it and having the tracking checked at a reputable place... if they're any good they'll set the steering straight again and adjust the tracking back...

Had similar on a previous car and took to a really good alignment place about 30 minutes and what a difference.

The misalignment was caused by a garage doing an 'alignment' after fitting tyres. The wheels may have been aligned but they clamped the steering wheel off-centre before starting. They then spouted some rubbish about the amount of alignment required being too great to keep the steering wheel straight. They were Quick to Fit, if you get what I mean.

The specialist alignment guy wouldn't even take me in within 3 days of having tyres fitted as he preferred to work after the suspension springs had time to relax after car's weight was reapplied after it was off the ground on the lift to change wheels.

Cost was same as other place but result was 100 times better.

Find a good alignment place- it's worth it.
