Fix Parcel Shelf Cord on Warranty
« on: 24 January 2014, 18:39 »
I had one of those days today where no matter what you touch it goes wrong or breaks.  One of the scenarios today involved me opening the boot in Tesco's car park to put the shopping in, only to hear the cord snap on the parcel shelf as the boot was midway open.  The language was blue and I noticed the cord was not fixable.  I rang my VW dealer and they said Even things like cords for Parcel Shelves can be fixed under warranty but I would have to book the car in with the Services dept. I was also told that I could buy a parcel shelf repair kit which has two replacement cord in it and cost £17.00p.   Well I live over 40 miles away from the dealer and would use almost £17 in fuel with a round trip (the route is dual carriageway all the way without saying too much and  incriminating myself).  I had also tampered with the cord in an attempt of fixing it, which would void the warranty claim.  So I opted for the Repair Kit.

I tried the free cord thing but it was just easier this time to pay out for the repair kit.  If the cords break this easy after 3 months of ownership then I think having a spare one in the cupboard is a wise move.

Are you the fella off the skittles advert?

How exactly did it break? Chafed cord or did the rubber ball fall off the bottom?
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I'd say get them to post the kit to you.

The question is, how did you break it? Have you got something heavy on the parcel shelf?

The boot was empty and there was nothing on the parcel shelf, neither do I ever keep anything on it anyway.  I think the shelf must have wedged itself against the part it usually rests somehow and got partially stuck until the boot got to a certain point and then snapped the cord out of the plastic clip at the base of the loop that fixes it to the boot.  The problem is the plastic clips are molded and not clipped together so I could not fix it myself, and the loop part of the cord was too short to tie or do anything with, without making the shelf angled too high when the boot is shut.

I have asked the VW Dealer to post the cords.  It will be good to have one spare if it is this easy to break the cords.

Also I don't think I am the guy on the skittles advert, I would probably be dead by now if I was, as I hate Skittles
