1.8t starting woes
« on: 08 January 2014, 17:22 »
Last month or two the car has been hesitating to start, turn key, wait a second, then it fired.

2 weeks ago it wouldn't go, not even turning over, lights all powerful while turning key, can hear fuel pump prime, so bump started it and it ran no bother, turned key while engine was running and could hear the starter grind.

So just changed starter motor, still wouldn't go, same symptoms. Doesn't turn over, now I've just changed the ignition switch assuming that was at fault. Still no joy!

What is my next point of call? I've had a quick look to see if there's any earth strap to gearbox but I can't find one, where is it on 1.8t?

Probably unrelated but my n/a indicators don't work either, bulbs all fine so I'm assuming hazard switch or stalk, can't get to scrap yard to find out till car runs. HELP!

Update. Still no joy.  I've had the multimeter out and checked what I can, earth is fine, battery still at 12v, strangely tho someone in the past had ran a wire from ignition to starter, was hoping this was at fault but meter shows no breaks.

Next job, take starter off, unless anyone knows anything else to check?

Solenoid on starter?

Try bridging the two big terminals on it.

Where all my moneys went.

Golf MK3 1.6. Golf MK3 8v GTI.

Joy of joys I've found it out.

My dad had tried giving it a live off battery, didn't work. Found he'd just pushed wire onto connector, not onto starters terminal, tried it myself and it's fired right up

The spade in the clip connector had pushed back too far and wasn't creating a circuit.

Now just another list of things to fix that I've broke along the way...
