Lube starter while still on the car?
« on: 09 January 2014, 00:57 »
Has anyone tried this? I don't know if it would be better to remove entirely. I finally got a spare starter so if I faff it up can just replace it..Still was wondering if it would be good to lube the starter while it is still on the car as this would save me the trouble of actually supporting the engine and then trying to line up the engine mount, engine and starter. It was a pain to do it when I changed the crank sensor on my Passat and I would rather avoid it if at all possible. Can I just remove the 8mm bolts and then lube and put the cap back on??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why would you want to split the starter when it is still on the car, you will probably damage the brushes and armature.
if you need to strip the motor do it on the bench and lubricate the (over running clutch) shaft, spring, cog and bearing pull it out gently with your hand and spray with high temp grease.
Are you asking for info for a Passat or golf
New toy1990 Scirocco I feel a 16v conversion coming on.

No this will be for my Golf...

Ok I know I should really take it off and sort it....just thought that maybe someone had greased the cogs with it still on the car...and been successful
