Clutch Query
« on: 23 August 2005, 11:09 »
Thought the clutch on my Golf 1.6 was on the way out, as it was slipping.

Took it out this morning, and it only slips when pulling away-which is a little unnerving when I need maximum accelleration away at a busy roundabout.

However, it will not slip under any other circumstances- not matter how hard you boot it, in any gear, it refuses to slip.

I now think that it is the cable, but the clutch pedal action is very light compared to other Golfs I have driven. The adjustment looks fine, although it does realease t the top of it's travel.

Any ideas? New cable, oil the cable, adjust it (though I do not see how), or new clutch.

Thanks

If you have an adjustable cable then adjust it. If you dont then buy an adjustable cable as the auto adjusting ones are poo.

Sorted-local VW specialist took it for a drive and comnfirmed it is the cable (commented on how light the pedal action is-how heavty is a heavy one then?) rather than adjustment. Pissing down, and as it is so little labour time, they wll do it tomorrow

I'll let you know the outcome/cost.

Bugger-despite initial analysis, it appears that not only is the cable buggered, but the clutch is completely worn out, and needs changing. I will seek a second opinion, but then I think I am clutching (no pun intended) at straws and putting off the inevitable :undecided:.

Now need to find somewhere that can do it cheap in Essex. No time or aptitude to do it myself :embarassed:
