Mk2 8 valve selling advice
« on: 28 August 2005, 17:27 »
This is a copy of a postiing I made in the 'for sale' section, You guys may also be able to give me some advice.
"Looking for some advice about my 1989 8 valve Gti. Road tax expires at end of month and MOT due in October. I have had the car for about 18 months and is mechanically in great condition other than the exhaust back box needing replaced (I have a brand new S/S backbox). The body is not brilliant, however the car has served me well. Due to personal circumstances I won't have any time for the forseeable future to spend any time on car maintenance. I had been planning to keep the car ticking over and on the road for the next few years before planning to spend my retirement years on a complete makeover of the car (taking early retirement). I have amassed a great amount of spares for the car, including, electric mirrors complete with wiring loom and 3 switches, complete set of electric windows x 2 with several spare switches, uprated front and rear speakers and door speakers and door speaker grilles(new). 6 ECU's, spare coil, distributor and injectors, brand new lowering springs (unused), brand new front struts (unused) and many more parts. My question is, what should I do, sell the lot as one item or sell the car and sell the spares separately? Really can't be bothered with the hassle, however, the spares must be worth in excess of £500 alone. Any thoughts on how I should proceed?"

If you have the chance of storing the car away or to continue using the car ticking away then do either if the car is very good structurally, underneath little rust in nasty places etc, and it  is more or less a good original example,I would keep the car and fully restore it in your retirement and sell all the spare stuff you have massed that you Deffo wont need for the job ie you wont need 6 Ecu`s,because to sell the car you`ll only get a few hundred notes and if its  good car overall,  once its gone its gone and good ones are getting thin on the ground, sod`s law if you get shut you`d wished you kept it,but if you're going to sell everything sell all the stuff separately on E-bay just make sure you put rare item in the title/description and the Muppet's will pay way over the odds good luck

oakie.uk. Thanks for the reply. Your advice is what I was looking for.
JTM, you obviously did not read my post (as you stated yourself) and that explains your response. If I was planning to just sell it I would have simply posted it in the 'cars for sale' section. However, I was actually looking for advice. You have probably stopped reading this post by now as it has more than two sentences in it so i amy as well stop now.

i agree, you should sell all the bits off seperately. maybe keep hold of the rear box as if the old one is shot its a good excuse for people to knock the price down. you've got a few bits i might be after actually!

Thanks for that, the rear box ain't just shot, it's in my boot because it fell off. Interesting to note though that my car does now have a very throaty sound and goes like stink. The straight through exhaust would probably account for that. Taking your point on board it may be wise for me to list the items I have available in the for sale section and try to sell the car in a local paper for a sensible price.

oakie.uk. Thanks also for your helpful reply. Unfortunately, I don't have the space or a sympathetic wife to allow me store the car. The 6  (at least) ECU's are I know a major piece of nonsense, however, having fried the ECU on my first Mk2 Golf some 10 years ago and finding it almost impossible at that time to get a spare (pre. internet and ebay, etc) I now buy any ECU I see for sale. Now have stopped this nonsense as my boot is full of ECU's and a knackered back box.

I would do as you say then advertise the car in the local rag,and sell parts separately either on here or e-bay (lecky mirrors allways fetch good money) shame really it would have been good to restore a Mk2 GTI (I fully restored a Mk1 GTI cabrio a few years ago was a fullfilling experience I bought the car cheap as the cambelt had snapped finished off fully stripping the car down to a bare shell  )I know what you mean though about amassing parts I have done that in the past over the years with RS turbos and R5 GT turbos (had no choice here) but most of the time you don`t  need it,come to think of it I have a pile of Mk2 stuff stashed away at work brand new 16v exhausts, sets of alloy wheels, grills, lights, bumpers, water hoses interiors, manuals  err amongst other stuff..luckily its all out of the way of the wife
